This Is Not A Designer.

16 Jun

Sometimes, (ok every time) Designers & Art Directors aren’t given enough credit for the skill they have.

Designing is not “drawing” it’s conceptualizing a brand in visual form in order to visually stimulate interest & attraction.

It frustrates me when i see designers are unappreciated. So i decided to do a little scribble 🙂

Enjoy & Be good to your designers.

Here is a little illustration drawn up by a friend of mine (Joe Akkawi)

There is nothing more satisfying than illustrating your emotions and reactions. Some stories are better drawn than told. It’s pretty self-explanatory and you can tweet this if you felt the same 🙂

Music to my ears

25 Sep

Ok, not exactly the way it happened, but still. I am ashamed to admit that i had no idea who Zeid Hamdan was or how he got his wings. But in my defense I live in Dubai, not Lebanon . For those who don’t know the band, then this is your lucky day. I’m going to make sure you never end up in a situation where you get smacked on the back of your head (please view illustration above for reference).

Zeid Hamdan started off in 1994 with his first CD Lucy with “THE LOMBRIX”. In 1997 he formed an indie electro-pop band based in Lebanon called Soapkills which was inspired from classical Arabic music and from the new electro scene that started  blossoming in the Middle East. He then went on to do a whole lot of other music with different genre and you can read all about it here *Ping*

Back to the wings, there doesn’t seem to be much info about them out there, so, i decided to ask them a few questions just so we can get our facts straight. In the beginning of 2010 Zeid posted a facebook announcement that read “Backing vocals needed , call 012345678 ”  Ladies and gents (and everyone in between) I give you the wings :

Let’s start off with Yasmeen Ayyashi, a designer and installation artist. Followed by Sarah Barrage, who moved to Montreal in 2008 and studied sound design to follow her dream. Gihan El Hage became part of the project ” by luck of acquaintance ” as she put it. I love that when I asked them who they were, they all replied with the same answer (more or less) ” I’m a wing”.  The band also includes Bashir Saade on ney and bass clarinet, Marc Codsi on guitar, drum machine, synth. I’ve posted their answers at the bottom, take some time to read them.

In August I did my usual “I’m running away” trip to Beirut, I had the pleasure of attending their concert. I didn’t know what to expect, but I was pleasantly entertained. The first words that came out of my mouth were “OMG, these guys are good” *tapping feet. Seriously, their harmony is insane. Along with Zeid’s indisputable talent, they can really rock some socks.

The fusion of electro, rock, reggae with the splash of English and Arabic, is something i personally had never heard before. Its a rainbow jumped into my ear and filled my head with color. I’m glad to see / hear something this pretty coming out of Lebanese musicians, i remember a time where the underground music scene in Lebanon was so depressing. If its true that music reflects a generation then HURRAY for this generation, out of the gloom and into the rainbow.

I think we should definitively set something up to bring their swing to Dubai. You never know, maybe our local musicians and the wings could create a new color 🙂 (cheese I know but it sounds pretty)

Here is one of their songs  : General Sulieman by Zeid and the wings
(love the cinematography(

ZEID
* When did your musical career start?

In 1994 when i released my first CD Lucy with my first band “THE LOMBRIX”

* How did you find your way to form Zeid and the wings?
I started it  with a facebook announcement  in the beginning of 2010 : “Backing vocals needed , call 012345678 ” 2 month later Yasmeen Ayyashi and Sarah Barrage start rehearsing and harmonising on my  repertoire of arabic and english songs joined a bit later by Bashir Saade on ney and bass clarinet , Gihane el Hage , a third vocalist,Marc Codsi on guitar, drum machine, synth and finally Rita Okais on vintage organ and Jupiter Synth. Rita has left the band since thoughThe music is a blend of arabic folk , reggae , rock and electro songs.

And i ask this next question knowing you won’t be able to answer in a simple sentence but try 🙂
* Who are you? No but seriously, for people who have only recently heard of you.

I’m the music producer behind Soapkills, The New Government , ShiftZ , Hiba Mansouri , Kanjha Kora , i try to be a singer , i’m someone with big dreams and a lot of energy .

* What genre of music would you place yourself in, because from what I’ve heard you have a mix of everything.

Arabic ,reggae ,  rock , electro .

* Can we try to get you to come play in Dubai ?
Please do !

* In a fight between Chuck Noris or Sylvester Stallone who do you think will win?
I  guess Stallone

YASMEEN
* When did your musical career start?
i used to sing at concerts in uni  back in the day…also used to play a small gigs with a friend who’s a guitarist (covers, of course), but it officially started when i met zeid:)

* How did you find your way to form Zeid and the wings?

Z posted a call for backing vocalists and i really wanted to get back into music. i was also a big fan of everything that he’d worked on before the wings, so, i called, auditioned, and started rehearsing right away with him and sara. gihan and marc joined a little later

* Who are you? No but seriously, for people who have only recently heard of you.
i’m a wing! among other things… i also do design and installation art… its all one big creative playground.

* What genre of music would you place yourself in, because from what I’ve heard you have a mix of everything.

you heard right 🙂 it’s eclectic  but mostly reggae, rock and electro, some in arabic some in english

* Can we try and get you to come play in Dubai ?

yes please thank you 🙂

* In a fight between Chuck Noris or Sylvester Stallone who do you think will win?
pfff… none. zeid & marc can kick chuck norris’s ass any day. stallone isn’t even part of the equation.

SARA
* When did your musical career start?

I was always musical and decided to take it seriously when i moved to Montreal in 2008 to study sound design. I decided that if i wanted a career in music it was now or never.

* How did you find your way to form Zeid and the wings?
I had been a huge fan of soapkills and discovered while surfing on the internet who zeid hamdan is so I contacted him immediately. I told him i wanted to work with him when i moved back to lebanon. As soon as i had moved back Zeid had posted on his FB status that he was looking for backup vocalists. So i gave him a call, auditioned and the rest is wonderful history!

* Who are you? No but seriously, for people who have only recently heard of you.
For people who have recently heard of me? I’m Zeid’s wing ofcourse!

* What genre of music would you place yourself in, because from what I’ve heard you have a mix of everything.
We’re not constrained to one specific style of music but in general it is rock. What is beautiful about zeid and the wings is that we feed off of all the sounds and music we hear around us and hope that our love for music in general transcends.

* Can we try to get you to come play in Dubai ?
Yes pls! i’ve never been

* In a fight between Chuck Noris or Sylvester Stallone who do you
think will win?

Chuck Noris obviously!!!!!  (this girl knows what she’s talkin about)
Ghina
* When did your musical career start?
I started taking myself seriously – musically – in my early teens. I realized how important it was to me. As so on as I realized I could perform in public without fainting, I began to do it regularly. Mostly at friends’ pubs, late at night, to a very (drunk) accomodating audience.

* How did you find your way to form Zeid and the wings?I became part of the project by luck of acquaintance. A friend of mine, Rosanna, put me in touch with Yasmeen when Sara was traveling and they needed someone to fill in for a few months. Zeid approved and … I’m still here

* Who are you? No but seriously, for people who have only recently heard of you.
I’m just one part of the manifestation of another of Zeid’s brilliant visions 🙂
* What genre of music would you place yourself in, because from what I’ve heard you have a mix of everything.I’d say we’re a fusion of a number of genres. Each song is unique and eclectic. If I had to classify us as one style though, it’d be rock.

* Can we try to get you to come play in Dubai ?
Yes! Would love to!

* In a fight between Chuck Noris or Sylvester Stallone who do you think will win?
Noris, no question.
